Kentish Orchards

Kent, England

Kentish Orchards tends heritage apple, pear, and plum trees across the Garden of England, hand-picking fruit at ripeness for eating, cooking, and pressing. Their orchards include varieties nearly lost...

The story

Our story

Kent once wore blossom like snow, and though many orchards vanished in the last century, we are among those planting them back. Kentish Orchards started when my uncle grafted scion wood from a dying Bramley onto rootstock in our farmyard, saving a tree his grandfather had planted. That act — small, stubborn, hopeful — became our philosophy: preserve what is worth eating, and share it honestly.

Our orchards mix dessert and culinary varieties, old and new, chosen for flavour and suitability to Kent's warm, loamy slopes rather than supermarket uniformity. We mow alleys for wildlife, hang nest boxes, and accept lower yields in exchange for fruit that tastes of sun and soil. Picking is by hand and by eye; fruit goes into the trug when ready, not when a schedule demands. Some apples store through winter in wooden racks; pears are sold quickly at their brief perfection.

We press a portion of each harvest for fresh juice and cider vinegar, but most fruit reaches customers whole — for lunchboxes, roasting pans, and preserving pots. We do not wax skins or gas-store under modified atmosphere. If a Cox is blemished on one cheek, we grade it honestly and price it fairly. Kent's orchard heritage belongs in kitchens, not in nostalgia alone.

We graft scion wood from veteran trees each spring, host blossom walks for local schools, and plan new plantings beside hedgerows that feed pollinators through the year. Every new tree is a bet on harvests we may not pick ourselves.

Today Kentish Orchards supplies Maxwells with seasonal fruit that changes through autumn into winter. We graft new trees each spring, teach school groups about pollination, and plan plantings our grandchildren might pick. The Garden of England earned its name; we intend to keep it deserved, one harvest and one honest crate at a time.
