Cumbrian Fell Lamb
Lake District, England
Cumbrian Fell Lamb brings hill-reared lamb from the Lake District fells — slow-grown, hardy, and shaped by upland grazing. Their flocks roam heather, rough pasture, and limestone grassland across Cumb...
Our story
We are shepherds first, and that identity runs as deep as the fells we call home. Cumbrian Fell Lamb grew from a handful of hardy Herdwick and Swaledale ewes on a Lakeland smallholding, where my grandfather learned to read weather on the ridge and trust the dog more than any forecast. The Lake District is not gentle farmland; it asks for stamina, knowledge, and respect. Our sheep thrive because they belong here.
Hill farming is slow by necessity. Our flocks move with the seasons — lower pastures in winter, higher ground in summer — grazing heather, bilberry, and sweet hill grass that gives the meat its distinctive character. Lambs grow without hurry, developing firm flesh and clean flavour rather than softness from quick finishing. We believe that patience is written into every joint.
For decades our lamb fed local households and market stalls in Keswick and Penrith. As demand grew, we formed a small co-operative of neighbouring hill farms who share our standards: outdoor life, minimal intervention, and full traceability from heft to abattoir. We still gather ewes on the fells as our families always have, and we still hang carcasses properly so the meat settles before cutting.
We explain cuts plainly to customers new to hogget and mutton, and we support young shepherds learning the trade on steep ground. That knowledge keeps hill farming viable when easier options tempt the next generation away.
Today we supply Maxwells with spring lamb, hogget, and occasional mutton — each reflecting the year that shaped it. We do not pretend to be anything other than upland farmers. The fells are demanding, but they give us lamb with a story in every bite, and we would not farm anywhere else. We are pleased that Maxwells shares our belief that hill lamb belongs on everyday tables, not only on special occasions.
