Whitby Day Boats

Whitby has sent boats to sea since Viking keels scraped the harbour mud, and the rhythm of our work still follows the tide. Whitby Day Boats is a collective of small-scale fishermen who refused to let their catch disappear into anonymous supply chains. We banded together to sell day-boat fish under our own name — landed fresh, handled properly, and traceable to the vessel that brought it home.

Day-boat fishing means our crews sail at first light and return before dusk. Fish spends hours on ice, not days in transit. Cod and haddock come from responsible grounds; crab and lobster follow strict seasons and size limits we enforce among ourselves because depleted stocks help nobody. We know every skipper, every deck, and every pot hauled from the kelp beds below the abbey cliffs.

On the quay, fish is graded, filleted, and packed by hands that understand texture and freshness. We do not soak fillets, bleach shells, or disguise age with heavy processing. Crab is picked when sweet, langoustines are sorted live, and whole fish still carry the sheen of recent sea. Customers who visit the harbour at landing time see exactly what we mean by fresh.

We mentor young deckhands, maintain logbooks that trace each box to a named boat, and refuse contracts that reward volume over careful handling of a finite resource. Those choices are not fashionable; they are how a harbour keeps its reputation.

Today we supply Maxwells with seafood that tells the truth about where and how it was caught. The North Yorkshire coast is not a postcard — it is a working place of wind, salt, and hard-earned skill.
